UPDATE: HOME BURGLERY
CIS, LLC and the Houston Police Department are continuing their investigation into a recent break-in on Herdsman. The incident appears to be isolated and there is no current danger to the neighborhood. As a reminder, each home must be equipped with a working alarm system connected to the master alarm system serving Memorial Thicket. One option is for this master alarm system and its monitoring be done by Smith Thompson. The charge for the Smith Thompson monitoring of your alarm system is included in your Homeowner's Annual Assessment (the resident is responsible for the connection to the master alarm system and any repairs, service calls, and upgrades). You can contact Smith Thompson at 972.526.8500 for more information and to enroll. During enrollment, please make sure that your account is set up to first call the Memorial Thicket Security Officer at 713.501.5406 for any burglary and emergency alarms. For fire alarms, Smith Thompson calls the Houston Fire Department first before calling the Memorial Thicket Security Officer. Additionally, if you have a Ring Camera on the exterior of your home, please take the time to occasionally wipe the exterior to remove any dirt or objects from the front lens that could compromise a clear image. Video images can play an important role in identifying vehicles and/or people of interest in cases such as this. Currently, 74 homes within Memorial Thicket are monitored through Smith Thompson.
BACK TO SCHOOL AND BACK TO WORK MEANS LOTS OF TRAFFIC
As you have already noticed, traffic in the area and on the freeways has increased now that people are back from summer vacations. To ensure your safety while driving, please remember the following safe driving tips:
Immediately lock your doors when you enter the vehicle.
DO NOT become involved with angry drivers and do not take traffic problems personally.
Avoid eye contact with an aggressive driver and do not make obscene gestures.
If someone is tailgating, pull into the slow lane and allow them to pass.
DO NOT tailgate other drivers or cut them off.
If you have car problems, raise the hood and tie a white cloth to the door handle to signal for help. Get back into the car and keep the doors and windows locked. If someone stops, do not roll down the window completely. Ask them to call for help if you are unable. Do not accept rides from anyone.
If you think someone is following you, do not go home. Drive to the nearest police station (11981 Memorial or 3203 S Dairy Ashford), fire station (15100 Memorial), open gas station, or well-lighted place where there are people that can help you.
BE THE "EYE" IN MEMORIAL THICKET
Being the "eyes of the neighborhood" refers to the shared responsibility of each resident to observe their surroundings and report suspicious activity. While this is a collaborative effort, it is important that individual residents take on the specific responsibilities to protect themselves and their neighbors. One way to do this is to be the eyes and ears as you go about your daily activities and business. If you see suspicious activities while walking, running, biking, driving, or visiting with neighbors, please reach out and report it to the guard on duty. You can call them at any time 24/7 at 713.501.5406 and they will be glad to assist. This is their job to investigate. Suspicious activities can include idle vehicles (with people inside), person(s) in the street in the very early AM hours, overhead drones, and people loitering in front of a residence. If you see something suspicious, say something! This open communication is key to keeping our community safe. Many property crimes go unsolved because of a lack of timely reporting. The Houston Police Department says that the first 48-72 hours after a crime is committed is critical to solving the case. You should never assume that someone else has reported an incident. When residents assume an incident has been reported, it prolongs the time it takes to gather evidence, making it harder for local law enforcement personnel to do their job when the incident is finally reported.
UNPAID PUBLIC ANNOUCEMENT
The Nominating Committee of the Memorial Thicket Homeowners Association (MTHA) is asking residents to consider serving on the MTHA Board. Business of Memorial Thicket is conducted by MTHA in accordance with the Declarations of Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (DCCR), its Articles of Incorporation, its By-Laws, and though its elected, volunteer directors. The MTHA's objectives are to enhance homeowner's property values, to maintain the attractiveness of our neighborhood, and to promote a safe and secure community for our residents. This is a great way to volunteer in your neighborhood. For more information, please send an e-mail to mthaboardsecurity@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you!
