Memorial Thicket continues to maintain an A+ crime grade compared to a C+ for the total 77079 zip code area. The information contained below is the March 2026 monthly breakdown of offenses for which HPD wrote police reports for zip code 77079. This report includes both incidents and arrests. Of the 105 offenses, none were recorded within Memorial Thicket.




HOW CAN MEMORIAL THICKET PREPARE FOR SUMMER TRIPS

Summer is the perfect time for the long-awaited vacation you have planned. During this time, it is also essential to prioritize safety and security to minimize the risk to your home, overgrown landscaping, and high utility costs. You should consider these tips:

  • Inform the guards of your vacation plans. You can fill out a Vacation Notice with the guards. You can ask them to walk your property while you are gone, pick up mail/newspapers, and even pick up packages delivered while you are away.

  • Adjust your light patterns to imitate occupancy and set up temperature settings relatively conservatively to save some money. You can also shut down non-essential services, like water heaters, to conserve additional energy and prevent more costs.

  • Provide ongoing landscaping and maintenance to keep your property neat when you are away. Investing in routine upkeep shows pride in ownership and contributes to our community's overall visual appeal. A well-maintained community is a source of pride for all residents and can deter potential intruders.

  • Be careful when sharing your absence over social media. This information can easily broadcast your absence to a broader audience—a potential setup for insecurity in your home. By taking precautions like these, you minimize the risk of burglary and ensure the safety of your home while away, giving you the peace of mind to fully enjoy your time away.


POOL AND WATER SAFETY

As the weather and the pool warm up, it is a good time to talk about pool and water safety. Active, focused, adult supervision is the most important safety measure to prevent a water-related tragedy involving someone enjoying the water, especially a child. The vast majority of children who drown in pools do so in the backyards of their own homes or of relatives. Therefore, it is a reminder that should always be repeated that you NEVER leave a child alone near water and to always watch your children around swimming pools.



The use of approved flotation devices is always recommended for swimmers who are not experienced, and to remember that flotation devices are not a substitute for supervision and that swimming lessons do not make your child "Drown-Proof"!


For backyard pools, it is recommended that fences and walls should be at least four feet high and installed completely around the pool. Gates should be self-closing and self-latching, and the latch should be out of reach of small children. If your home forms one side of the barrier for the pool, doors leading from the house to the pool should be protected with alarms that sound when the doors are unexpectedly opened. You may also consider a power safety cover, a motor-powered barrier placed over the water area, to prevent access by young children. For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured or removed when the pool is not in use.


The Houston Fire Department also recommends parents and guardians learn CPR. It is known that seconds count if a person drowns and performing CPR quickly and correctly can save their life. For more information on local CPR classes, please contact the American Red Cross.


BACKYARD BIRD WATCHING 

Before the temperatures begin to climb during the day, early mornings are a great time to grab your morning selection, head outside, and enjoy the sights and sounds of our feathered neighbors. There is no better place to spot a variety of beautiful birds than your own yard. Some of the common birds that you are likely to see now include the Northern Cardinal, the Great-tailed Grackle, the House Finch, the Mourning Dove, and the Lesser Goldfinch.


FIREWORKS AND NOISE ORDINANCES

This is just a good reminder that regardless of the time of year, the City of Houston Code of Ordinances Chapter 30 states that it is unlawful for any person to make or assist in making loud, unnecessary, or unusual sound or noise that disturbs, injures, or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace, or safety of others.  In the City of Houston, quiet time is generally from 10:01pm-7:59am. Our community should strive to ensure that the privacy and comfort of our residents is always respected. In addition, it is also illegal to purchase, possess, and discharge fireworks in the City of Houston, which includes inside Memorial Thicket. If you have issues with the noise level or the discharge of fireworks within Memorial Thicket, please contact the security guard on duty at (713)501-5406.
